If you prefer a shorter trail, there is one that can be completed within a day. This trail will provide amazing photo opportunities of nature and wildlife such as the Black-maned Kalahari Lion, Gemsbok, Pygmy Falcons and many more.

Marakele 4×4 Eco Trail – Marakele National Park – Limpopo

For the more experienced 4×4 driver, this tree-day trail in the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve is the perfect challenge for your low range 4×4 rental. The trail travels from the main gate to the Moralane gate twice a week in the dry season, between the 1st of April and the last Sunday in October. Only 5 4×4 vehicles and a maximum of four people per vehicle is allowed. Any children under the age of twelve are allowed on request only. This trail guarantees an exciting challenge as you venture through the primitive wilderness, seeing several animals like the elephant, rhino, eland, and many more. There is tons to see on this remarkable, malaria-free safari in your 4×4 rental.

Bedrogfontein 4×4 Trail – Addo Elephant National Park – Eastern Cape

You can take your 4×4 rental on this six-hour adventure which can be done in either direction between Darlington and Kabouga. Only low range vehicles are permitted and you should be prepared for the option of a tough river crossing under certain weather conditions. You will travel through a large variety of landscapes including forest, riverine thicket, the nama-Karoo and mountain peaks covered in fynbos. There are several Bushman paintings that can be seen in this area and it is also the site of many historical Anglo-Boer battles. Addo is a malaria-free Big Five game reserve where you will be able to see amazing animals such as the rhino, buffalo, zebra, and many more.

Caracal 4×4 Eco Trail – Namaqua National Park – Northern Cape

This tail can be completed in one 6-8 hour journey or divided into sections. From the mountains of Skilpad Reserve, through the beautiful flatlands, down the coast and by the scenic Groen River mouth you will enjoy the spectacular Namaqualand landscapes from your 4×4 rental. Even though this area is renowned for its wildflowers, you will also get to see several other wonders and untouched pieces wilderness. Other than the rare flora, you will get to see Black Harriers, Klipspringers and even caves and shipwrecks along the coastline.

Augrabies Falls

The Wilderness Road – Augrabies Falls National Park – Northern Cape

This circular route takes about 6 hours but you can enjoy many stops and side routes, along with a number of view sites, waterholes and picnic spots. The trail begins at the main falls and rest camp and then ends there as well. You can expect stunning scenery around the Augrabies Waterfall and the Orange River gorge. You can also expect to see the Verreauxs’s Eagle, the Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, the Rock Hyrax and much more.

Mountain Zebra National Park – Eastern Cape

In this park there are three trails you can conquer with your 4×4 rental. The Umngeni Trail is the most challenging. It starts at the main rest camp and takes only around an hour to complete. If you desire a slightly longer trip, you can take on the Juriesdam Trail where you will explore the Eastern plateau. Finally the Sonnenrust Trail is the longest as it allows you to explore the North-Western section of the park. It ends on a plateau where you can enjoy stunning mountain views in an historic area. On these trails you will be able to see wonderful animals like the buffalo, rhino, cheetah and many more.
